SHENANGO WEST.

West Shenango was formed from South Shenango in 1863. It lies in the south-west corner of the county, and is separated from South Shenango by the Shenango Creek. It contains 5,195 square acres. The initial settlement was made in 1800 by Andrew Betts and his son John; Thomas Lowry and Benjamin Snodgrass came also in 1800 from Ireland. In 1801 Jeremiah Yokes located, and the year following Robert Finch located in the northern part. The first school was taught by Edward Hatton, and the first church organization was made by Rev. E. Morse, and was called the State Line M. E. Church. The population of the township in 1870 was 357. The number of schools in the township is four, with an average attendance of 77; the cost per annum being about $450. The post offices within its limits are Royalton and Turnersville. The latter is the only town in West Shenango, and is situated near the centre of the township. It contains one Methodist Protestant Church, Rev, A. E. Bunday, pastor; one M. E. Church, Rev. W. M. Bear, pastor; one school, one hotel, one store, one blacksmith shop, one harness shop, one tannery and shoe shop.
