STEUBEN TOWNSHIP.

This township was formed from Athens in 1861. It is an interior township, and contains 13,772 acres. It is drained by Oil Creek and Muddy Creek. The principal industry is lumbering. The population in 1870 was 1,020. The towns within its borders are the borough of Townville and the village of Tryonville. It contains 7 schools, with an average attendance of 180 pupils; the amount expended for school purposes is about $1,200 annually. It is traversed in the eastern part by the Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Titusville, and the Union and Titusville Railroads, along the valley of Oil Creek.
