SPARTANSBURG.
Is situated near the centre of Sparta township, upon the line of the Pittsburgh, Buffalo & Titusville Railroad.  The first store was built in 1837 by Andrew and Aaron Akin, and the place was known as Akinville till the establishment of a post-office, when the present name was substituted.  It was incorporated as a borough in 1856, and contains about 600 inhabitants.  It has one M. E. Church, C. M. Coburn, pastor; one Baptist Church, Rev. O. L. Shearer, pastor; one Congregational Church, Rev. W. S. McKellar, pastor; one graded school, one hotel, one flouring mill, one saw mill, one tannery, one oar factory, one woolenmill, one bowl factory, one planing mill, three groceries, two dry goods and clothing stores, one hardware store, one stove and tinware store, two millinery stores, two harness shops, two carriage manufactories, three blacksmith shops, one jeweler, and two shoemaker shops.  The secret societies are Spartan Lodge, No. 372, F. and A. M.; Success Council, No. 194, Royal Arcanum; Sparta Lodge, No. 5, Mutual Protection Association; and Station No. 49, State Police.
