ROME TOWNSHIP.
    This township was formed in 1830.  It is the central of the east border line of townships, and contains 22,554 acres.  It is drained by Oil Creek and its tributaries.  This locality was first settled by Patrick Magee, Patrick Brannon, James Lafferty, Roger Coyle, Daniel McBride, and Daniel Carlin, natives of Ireland, in 1800.  They gave it the name of Rome from the Church of their religion.  The first English settlement was made by Benjamin Harrison in 1833, and at about the same time James J. and James A. Vrooman settled in the central part of the township.  The population at the latest census was 1,274.  The Pittsburgh, Titusville & Buffalo.and Union & Titusville Railways cross the northwestern part of the township.  It contains eleven schools, having an average attendance of 206, and costing about $1,300 annually.  Centreville borough is situated in the western part.
