Origins: James Hart obtained the patent and began selling lots here by 1830.  Harts Cross Roads P.O. established 1827.  Called Hart's Town in 1837.  Shown as Hartford on the 1839 county map, Hartstown on the 1848 county map.1

Be it enacted ... that Hartstown, in the county of Crawford ... is hereby erected into a borough, which shall be called the borough of "Hartford," bounded and limited as follows: beginning at the n.w. corner on line of John Kinsman, where Joseph Patten's land intersects said line; thence east to the embankment; thence by the embankment to the index post at the forks of the road near Franklin Buel's house; thence south to the s.e. corner of lot of John M'Fann; thence west to the west side of a lot of ground belonging to the Methodist church, by land of William Henry's to a post; thence north by land of D. S. Martzall and John M'Masters, to the s.e. corner of John Harris's lot; thence west by lot of Harris and M'Masters to the s.w. corner of Harris's lot; thence north by Harris's line to the state road; thence north from state road by land of Joseph Patten and Andrew M'Kelvy, (deceased,) to the corner of M'Kelvy's lots; thence east by lot of M'Kelvy and land of J. Patten to Patten's line; thence north by land of Patten to the place of beginning.
10 Aug. 1855 Made subject to the 1851 Act re: boroughs, and name changed to Hartstown.3
Ordered ... [that the former charter be amended] to confer on them the powers and privileges of said [1851] act under the style and title of the Borro [sic] of Hartstown.
6 July 1915 Charter annulled.4
Ordered ... that the lands embraced within the limits of said borough of Hartstown shall revert and become a part of the Township of West Fallowfield from which said lands were originally taken.
